New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) brings Super J Cup 2020 live to fans of the company on December 12th through its own New Japan World streaming service and FITE TV. The seemingly now annual New Japan of America (NJoA) single-elimination tournament has drawn a bit of buzz due to the collective field of wrestlers from within and outside the IWGP Conception (NJPW, Ring of Honor [ROH], Revolution Pro Wrestling [RevPro], and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre [CMLL]). While travel made it nearly impossible for a CMLL or RevPro representative, the field remains quite strong.
Lio Rush, who had a shaky start to his 2020 campaign with being released from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as ‘cost-cutting‘ measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the company later turning massive profits during the health disaster. That difficult situation followed Lio Rush having a public disagreement with Mark Henry, who seemingly threatened to have him blacklisted on several occasions.
Now, Lio finds himself as an entry into Super J Cup 2020. He faces Bullet Club member and former one-half of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions (w/reigning two-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion “Bone Soldier” Taiji Ishimori) El Phantasmo [ELP], who also won Super J Cup 2019.
Recently, a promotional video for the tournament was released by NJPW and Lio Rush, hyping Lio’s entry into the tournament.

If Lio can defeat ELP in the first round, he likely becomes the favorite to win the golden jacket, which could open up Lio making an anticipated appearance on the Wrestle Kingdom 15 cards on January 4th and January 5th.
With everything in front of Lio, the Super J Cup represents a new beginning for the youthful wrestler, who at 26 has a long career ahead of him.
