On December 12th, New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) presented the Super J Cup 2020 tournament. The one-night campaign would crown a new trophy winner the day after former three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, Best of the Super Juniors 25 (BOSJ 25), and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member “Time Bomb” Hiromu Takahashi won the BOSJ 27 trophy.
The opening match to the single-elimination tournament saw NJPW Los Angeles (LA) Dojo Young Lion and Lion’s Break Crown 2020 winner Clark Connors take on former X Division (Impact Wrestling) Champion Chris Bey.
Despite Connors winning Lion’s Break Crown, he came into the match as a slight underdog against Chris Bey. However, Connors brought his brand of Junior Heavyweight physicality against the less physical presence of Bey.
Bey took on the challenge, showing that he could also wrestle a physical striking style the Young Lion is known for. The style worked into the favor of Connors, but he couldn’t unlock the solution of defeating Bey.
Chris Bey would gain the fall at the 9 minutes and 36 seconds mark with his Art of Finesse technique to move on to the Super J Cup 2020 semi-final round against the winner of ACH and TJP.
The showing by Clark Connors shows that he is extremely close to going on an excursion or graduating from his Young Lion status. While he may be frustrated with the results, taking one of Impact Wrestling’s best Junior Heavyweight wrestlers to the limit shows how advanced he is when compared on the global stage.
While Bey was able to capture the victory, he probably would have enjoyed beating the Young Lion quicker, as he had to wrestle a veteran in the next round. Bey was impressive, but he went into the next round more spent than he would have liked.
