On a night that saw the AEW World Championship change hands for just the third time ever, something overshadowed it. It takes something truly huge to overshadow a major event like that, something which was almost twenty years in the making, containing a bonafide wrestling megastar. AEW has brought in some major legends in the past, but wrestling legend Sting showing up on TNT again for the first time since 2001 was their biggest yet.

It has been the talk of the wrestling world, and despite being 61 years old, Sting is back. His debut wasn’t a one off showing, with him being officially added to the roster page for AEW. What is Sting up to in AEW?

Could Sting Have One Last Match?

Back in 2016, the career of Sting was brought to an end in a match against Seth Rollins. It was Night Of Champions, and Rollins was defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Sting. A Buckle Bomb gone wrong would injure Sting’s neck, and that would seemingly end his career. Now a few years later, he has a chance to make up for that in AEW.

The landscape of professional wrestling has changed since 2016, and that could be what makes it easy for Sting to have another match. Matches don’t have to be live anymore, with 2020 bringing a more cinematic style of match to the fore-front. AEW has mainly used this style for Stadium Stampede and Elite Deletion, and Sting could be next.

He’s open to having a match of this style, having pushed hard for a cinematic match with Undertaker in WWE, but was shot down by Vince McMahon. Now, he could do this in AEW. There are no big rivals he could face there, but a cinematic match with Chris Jericho could definitely put some extra eyes on AEW.

Bringing Law & Order To AEW

Another route we could see the Stinger take is that of an enforcer. Too often in AEW, things descend into pure chaos after a match, with no one having the ability to bring order to the mix. However, Sting was able to do just that this week on Dynamite, coming to the aid of Cody Rhodes, Darby Allin and Arn Anderson. Sting might be old, but he still carries a dangerous presence.

His aura is enough to put most into awe, and if that isn’t enough, his baseball bat is still very dangerous. This is a fine role for someone like Sting, popping up to help calm situations down, and doesn’t require him to take any risks in the ring. People just want to see Sting on TV again, and this is a way to do it without making him wrestle.

What do you hope to see from Sting in AEW? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
