As of 2021, Evolve Wrestling is dead. They are one of the many casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic, but will live on with uploads on the WWE Network. However, the physical belts still exist, including the Evolve Championship. With the final champion, Josh Briggs (potentially now Joshua Bruns) signed to NXT, will we see that title get one last grasp at relevancy? Could Briggs show up on NXT with the Evolve Championship to help him feel like a bigger deal?
Many NXT Alumni and Talent Are Former Evolve Champions
When it comes to the current crop of stars in NXT, there are five names who have held the Evolve Championship. Shane Strickland (now Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott), Austin Theory, Fabian Aichner, Timothy Thatcher and Josh Briggs. But it does not end there.
The only champion to currently have had zero involvement in WWE & NXT is the first champion, AR Fox. This is because Chris Hero (Kassius Ohno in NXT), Drew McIntyre, Zack Sabre Jr. and Matt Riddle are also former Evolve Champions who were on NXT. Literally 9 out of 10 Evolve Champions were on NXT at some point, even Zack Sabre Jr. for the Cruiserweight Classic!
Using This History To Legitimize Josh Briggs Immediately
When the championship you last held was also once held by the current WWE Champion? You have bragging rights, and that could be crucial to introducing Josh Briggs. Having him come into NXT wearing this championship would instantly help him feel like a big deal, instead of him feeling like just another guy on the roster.
It could also allow him to bump heads with Austin Theory, the man Briggs beat for the Evolve Championship back in 2019. Bumping heads with Theory means you’re involved with The Way, therefore the NXT North American Championship!
This is a very easy way to set up a Champion vs. Champion match, and give Evolve a send off as their championship is either absorbed into the North American Championship, or their last champion proves why Evolve was a strong brand. It gives Briggs an instant angle to enter NXT with, something which many tend to lack.
