One of the biggest announced heavyweight clashes of the year was set to take place at the beginning of March. However, the Wembley date that was previously agreed by the two fighters has now been altered, and it was announced over the weekend that Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin will now face off on the 27th March in Gibraltar.
Eddie Hearn announced the change, and revealed that the reason behind the move was due to travel restrictions that have been imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Boxing News: Second Time Fight Has Been Delayed
This isn’t the first time that the rematch has been re-arranged, as it was first going to happen before the end of 2020. However, the fight was forced to be delayed after Povetkin contracted coronavirus, and was left in a bad condition in hospital. Hearn revealed that delay on social media shortly before the fight was due to take place.
His latest Tweet regarded the new date also saw the British promoter label the fight ‘Rumble on the Rock’. It does promise to be one of the most significant nights of the year in the heavyweight division, as the winning fighter could be next in line for a crack at the world title after the unification fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury has been staged.
Boxing News: Huge Night For Whyte
The fight will arguably be the biggest moment in Whyte’s career, as he looks to become the WBC interim champion once again. The British fighter had been the mandatory challenger for the belt that was previously held by Deontay Wilder for a number of years before that defeat, and he will be keen to get that tag back. Defeat would leave his career at a cross roads, and it would be unlikely that he would ever be able to come back from another set back.
The first fight between the two stars came back in August last year, and was shockingly won by Povetkin. Experts were aware that the Russian was a genuine contender to beat Whyte, but a victory for him looked to be a big ask given the form that Whyte had been in for a long period of time. However, the defeat for Whyte was the second time that he had been knocked out, and there will need to be an instant response at the end of March.
