Edge winning the Royal Rumble triggered a few thoughts and feelings among WWE fans online.
Of course, there are the Edge fans, and many in general, that loved watching him last the whole match and come out the winner.
Ohers, including myself, have pointed out how it shows the WWE’s lack of faith in their current crop of stars to main event WrestleMania that they regularly bring in part timers to bring fans in.
Honestly, I don’t think it’s as much the talent’s fault as it is the people running things behind the scenes and/or a combination of things.
It’s frustrating for all of us when the company tries to patchwork a previous generation in to make a major storyline instead of having them appear here and there.
But with all of that said, there’s another controversy brewing and it has the potential to really mess up Vince McMahon’s plans if they have fans at WrestleMania as it appears they’re expecting.
Finn Balor’s the choice
Several fan run polls on various social media outlets have shown that the fans there want Edge to Challenge Finn Balor for the NXT Championship and main event WrestleMania.
These polls are just a section of the fans, but it does give a glimpse into what could be the current mindset, meaning fans may not be interesting in Edge going after Drew McIntyre of Roman Reigns.
Others expressed their thoughts in response to Edge’s Tweet about appearing on NXT.
While detractors point out that Edge’s claim that he wants to win the championship he never lost means the WWE Championship, he technically never lost the Universal or NXT Championship.
He never won them, either, and it’s not like the WWE cares about consistency when it comes to their storylines as they demonstrate regularly.
So it’s possibility if McMahon is paying attention as has been claimed and he cares about what fans want, with often appears debatable.
There are a few boons to doing this, too.
Boosting NXT
Edge and Balor main eventing WrestleMania would legitimize the WWE’s third brand and give it a huge boost in its Wednesday night slot on USA across from AEW Dynamite.
And since it can be argued that they sent Balor to NXT to do that and it hasn’t been the lightning in the bottle they hoped for, this could be the jolt the developmental brand needs.
It’s also give Edge a chance to work with the younger talent and imbue more of his wisdom and experience to help them develop and strengthen the company overall.
Of course, there’s also the chance that many fans will see it as a cheap attempt to draw in fans, just like brining Edge and Goldberg back were.
But does the benefit outweigh the risk? If fans have their say, things in the WWE could become interesting before too long.
