It has been another couple of weeks, and still there has been no word regarding whether the title unification fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is any closer to being agreed. There have been conflicting reports over the last couple of weeks, with some claiming that the deal has been agreed, with each fighter getting a share of £100 million, while other reports have downplayed the truth in those stories.
As yet, there has been no official announcement regarding whether the fight will happen, which looks to have irritated the management of heavyweight hopeful Oleksandr Usyk.
Boxing News: Usyk Team Growing Tired
It was revealed a couple of weeks ago that talks between Usyk and Joe Joyce were close, which was one of the main stumbling blocks in making the unification fight happen. However, those talks are still going on, which has led to Usyk’s promoter to call from the WBO to be ‘courageous’ and sanction the mandatory title fight with Joshua and delay the unification fight for later in the year.
The latest comments made by Alexander Krassyuk would certainly remind fight fans that the deal to make the unification fight happen still has roadblocks, and this could be the biggest threat to making the fight happen. Talks between Usyk’s and Joyce’s representatives have been going on for nearly three months now, and still no announcement has been made regarding the WBO interim bout.
Boxing News: Usyk Told In January That Unification Happening
The Usyk camp revealed back in January that they had been given written notice that the WBO was to sanction the unification fight, but the lack of movement on the deal has meant that the Usyk team have been getting restless. The promoter claimed this week that should Joshua/Fury fight not be taking place until the end of the year, then Usyk’s mandatory challenge should be issued before any unification fight.
The chances of that happening, and the WBO going back on their word do appear incredibly slim, but fans, like the fighters, are growing restless at the slow pace that the talks are going at. There was a belief that the unification fight could have been taking place in June in Saudi Arabia a month ago, but already that date is looking more and more unlikely with every passing week with no announcement.
