The Premier League season continued this past weekend with another round of entertaining games. The biggest fixture of the weekend took place on Sunday afternoon, as two of the sides in competition for a Champions League place this season met at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Manchester City were looking for a 20th win on the bounce on Saturday afternoon against top-four hopefuls West Ham United, and Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were both looking for a return to winning ways.
Soccer News: United & Chelsea Play Out Stalemate
There were no goals in the big game in the Premier League this weekend, as Manchester United and Chelsea settled for a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. The draw wouldn’t have been seen as the end of the world for either of the sides involved, as United were able to stay in second with a healthy advantage, while Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start at Chelsea manager continued. United felt hard done by in the first-half, as they weren’t given a penalty despite a blatant handball by Callum Hudson-Odoi.
VAR looked at the action, but decided against awarding the penalty, which was later questioned by United’s Luke Shaw and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. There were few chances in the game for both sides, with Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood having chances for United, while Hakim Ziyech forced a good stop from David De Gea in the second half.
Soccer News: City Continue Winning Run
Manchester City made it 20 wins on the bounce in the opening game of the weekend, as they battled to a 2-1 victory against West Ham United. John Stones and Ruben Dias scored the goals in the victory for Pep Guardiola’s side. The win means that City are now closing in on the 25-game winning run, which was the world record for consecutive victories.
There were big wins on Sunday for Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Leicester City and Burnley respectively. The Gunners claimed a 3-1 win, with Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe among the scorers. Gareth Bale was back to his best for Spurs, as he scored twice in a 4-0 win against Burnley. There were also wins this past weekend for West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Liverpool. Meanwhile, there were draws for relegation contenders Newcastle United and Fulham against Wolves and Crystal Palace respectively.
