Every Sunday in the Premier League is built as ‘Super Sunday’ but that was certainly the case yesterday, as some of the biggest teams in the league were in action. The action-packed day of games was headlined by the third Manchester derby of the season, as United were looking to get revenge on City after they were knocked out of the League Cup by their local rivals in January.
It would be the red side of Manchester celebrating at the Etihad yesterday, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recorded a third away success against Pep Guardiola.
Soccer News: United Dominate Derby
United got off to the best possible start in the derby yesterday, as they were awarded a penalty inside the opening 60 seconds after Gabriel Jesus recklessly brought down Anthony Martial. Bruno Fernandes has needed to endure negative press throughout the build-up to the match as there were questions revolving around why he, nor United show up for games against the traditional top six.
However, he put those doubters wrong inside two minutes by firing home the penalty. Rodri would come the closest for City in the game, as he struck the bar. However, that would be the only time City threatened the United backline. The game was taken away from the hosts earlier in the second half after Luke Shaw curled home to finish a brilliant counter-attack, which was started by Dean Henderson. It was the fitting moment in the game for the left-back, as he was one again the best player on the pitch for the Red Devils.
Soccer News: Liverpool Beaten At Home Again
The win for United means that they are now eleven points behind City in the title race, but their position in the Champions League places looks to be a strong one. The same can’t be said of Liverpool, who were beaten for the sixth time in a row at Anfield in the game before the Manchester derby. Mario Lemina scored the only goal in the win for Fulham, which sees them move level on points with 17th placed Brighton & Hove Albion.
It was more unwanted history for Jurgen Klopp, as they became the first side to lose six straight home games in the top-flight since Huddersfield Town in 2019. Tottenham Hotspur also took advantage of Liverpool’s defeat to move up the league standings, as Gareth Bale and Harry Kane both scored twice in a 4-1 win against Crystal Palace on Sunday night.
