UFC News: Sean O’Malley Looks To Avenge Defeat This Weekend Against Thomas Almeida

Sean O’Malley was built as the next best thing to come out of UFC when he made his way out of Dana White’s Contender Series. However, defeat against Marlon Vera has left him needing a win this weekend to get back into the title picture in a very competitive looking welterweight division.

That may be easier said than done, especially considering that O’Malley still refuses to admit that he lost to Vera last year. The mentality of the much-loved star has often been questioned, but this weekend will be his chance to put those critics right, and the only way to do that will be the one standing tall at UFC 260.

UFC News: Huge Night For O’Malley

Even the very best fighters can get caught on an off night, and that was certainly the case back at UFC 252, as Vera upset the odds to cause a shock TKO defeat on the talented O’Malley. That defeat in the first round has done little to dampen the 26-year-olds confidence, and instead he is insisting that he will get back to winning ways this weekend.

It would be hard to argue against him keeping that promise, as he has been insanely productive in the octagon throughout his career to this point. Taking away that defeat, O’Malley won all 12 of his first professional fights, with the two wins over Eddie Wineland and Jose Alberto Quinonez before defeat against Vera certainly capturing the imagination. Both of those wins came with first round finishes, and saw O’Malley awarded the Performance of the night on both occasions.

UFC News: Big Test This Weekend

How fighters bounce back from setback is normally the best time to judge what they could possibly be. Even the very best have needed to recover from defeat, and that’s what makes the stars and the stories so much-loved from a fan’s perspective. O’Malley will have the opportunity to do just that this weekend as he comes up against Thomas Almeida.

The Brazilian has fought 26 times as a professional throughout his career, and will be returning to the octagon this weekend after being beaten by decision by Jonathan Martinez in October last year. That was Almeida’s third straight defeat, and fourth in the space of five. All four of his professional defeats have come in his last five, but he remains a fighter that O’Malley should be extremely wary of, as he has won 21 of his 22 fights inside the distance.
