The Universal Championship picture is looking very crowded at present, but it is easily making for the most engaging storyline going into WrestleMania this year. Edge, Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns will clash at the showpiece event with the gold on the line, and the match will likely be the one to bring a close to the weekend of action.
Reigns will walk into the event as champion, but does the Head of the Table have the chances of walking out of the event with the gold still around his waist?
WWE News: Reigns Retains
One outcome that many fans haven’t really thought about is Reigns regaining the title. Many expect the star to drop the title to either Edge or Bryan at Mania, but maybe there is a stronger argument that he should continue carrying the title. Reigns has been the biggest star on SmackDown since his return, and every match that he is involved in seems to be the match of the night.
His rivalries are the ones that fans watch SmackDown to see, and he is undeniably the face of the company. Reigns retaining not only further illustrates that he is the top dog, but also opens the door for some huge matches further down the line. We also wouldn’t be completely against Reigns holding the title for the next year to build up to a match with The Rock for Mania next year.
WWE News Edge Wins
When Edge returned at the Royal Rumble, it was heavily expected that he was going to go on and win the main event and challenge for the Universal Championship at Mania. However, not many could have seen a heel turn coming, which could mean that his chances of walking out as champion have decreased slightly.
The story of Edge coming back to reclaim what he lost is a very strong one, but it is weakened slightly by the fact that he is not a face. However, there would still be few arguments should he be the star ending the night with the title above his head.
WWE News: Bryan Wins
The added element of Bryan being in the match does add something fresh, and the story that the three superstars have told over recent weeks has been an engaging one.
However, the WWE have done the Bryan against all odds storyline so many times in the past that fans would be forgiven for not caring as much this time around. It would be hard to see Bryan becoming Universal champion at Mania, but he will certainly ensure that the match is an entertaining one, and one that will be remembered.
