The Premier League returned after the international break with an exciting weekend of football. It was a weekend of comebacks, which seemed fitting given it was the Easter Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom.
However, it was Manchester City that were the biggest winners of the weekend, as they remain 14 points clear of Manchester United, with just seven games left to play in the English top-flight this season. However, it looks set to be a nervy fight for the final place in the Champions League, while the battle at the bottom of the league took an unexpected turn.
Soccer News: City Win On The Road
Manchester City moved clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday evening, as they claimed a dominant 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium against Leicester City. Pep Guardiola’s side were in control of the game from start to finish, but needed to wait for their opportunities to score the goals that their play deserved. City eventually went into the lead just before the hour mark, as Benjamin Mendy scored his second goal of the season. Gabriel Jesus wrapped up the win 15 minutes from time.
Liverpool produced their best performance in the league this calendar year in the late game on Saturday, as they picked up a comfortable 3-0 win against a struggling Arsenal side. The Reds needed to wait until after the hour to go ahead, as Diogo Jota powered a header into the Arsenal goal. Mohamed Salah marked a special night by scoring the second, before Jota scored his second of the game in the final ten minutes.
Soccer News: Chelsea Stunned, United Comeback
The match of the weekend was the game that got it all underway at Stamford Bridge, as Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start at Chelsea was routinely ended by 19th placed West Brom. The Blues went ahead through Christian Pulisic, before Albion turned the game around on the stroke of half-time through a brace from Matheus Pereira. Things only got worse for the Blues in the second half, as Callum Robinson scored twice for the Baggies, while Mbaye Diagne also found the net. Mason Mount did manage to pull another back, but a 5-2 defeat sent shockwaves around the league.
Manchester United came back from behind to capitalise on the Chelsea defeat against Brighton, with Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood scoring the goals. United are now eleven points clear of fifth placed Spurs, who could only draw 2-2 with Newcastle earlier in the day. Sheffield United’s relegation to the Championship is nearly assured as they lost 2-1 to Leeds United on Saturday, while Aston Villa came from behind to beat Fulham on Sunday.
