It was recently confirmed that a lot of studios were joining this year’s digital E3. There were a couple of notable absences from the original line up. One of these being Square Enix. One of the heavy hitters in the gaming industry and has recently been making its rounds due to being rumoured to be acquired.
It was confirmed this wasn’t going to happen. Since then, Square Enix has confirmed that they will now be a part of the upcoming E3.
What Square Enix had to say
Square Enix confirmed this in an interview with Japanese publication Nikkei saying this:
“Outriders, which was delayed, was released on April 1, 2021. And NieR Replicant will release this month as well. Final Fantasy VII Intergrade will be released in June.
We have several other games lined up, which we plan to announce at E3 2021 in June, so please look forward to these announcements.”
Side note, if you’re interested in Outrider, it’s currently available on Game Pass. The number of games we are getting is interesting as we’re looking at 7 different games being announced in E3 2021.
What could be announced at E3?
It seems like, by the wording, that all 7 of these announcements may be new games. One of these does seem to be most likely something to do with the upcoming Final Fantasy. That leaves 6 other games we know nothing about. Square Enix has published a great game through Outriders. So we might see two completely different IPs that are published there. This leaves 4 announcements that could appear.
Another one of these may be the upcoming The World Ends with You. The game has already been announced but maybe a bit more information on it. Then we have the last 3 games. The two games that could benefit from a new game in the series may be a Dragon Quest and a Kingdom Hearts announcement.
Both series don’t have a current main game announced. Lastly, we might see a new original IP from Square Enix or maybe even a new Marvel IP after the last one not going great. There are a lot of games the 7 could be, but we won’t have any confirmed until E3.
