One of the biggest UFC fights of the year has been thrown into doubt after Conor McGregor revealed that it is off on social media. The two had exchanged comments just last week and revealed that they were both looking forward to the hotly anticipated trilogy fight, which would be the biggest fight of the year.
McGregor and Dustin Poirier were set to fight on the 10th July, but McGregor has now indicated that he will looking to face someone else instead. The whole disagreement between the fighters stemmed back from Poirier’s claims that McGregor hasn’t kept to his promise of donating $500,000 to the Good Fight Foundation.
UFC News: McGregor Lets Rip On Social Media
The comment from Poirier didn’t go down well with McGregor, who went back and forth on each other in a number of Tweets. Poirier posted a video of him knocking out McGregor in their meeting earlier in the week, while the Irishman posted a reply teasing Poirier with the previous fight between the pair which was won by the Irish fighter.
McGregor unloaded the following day with a number of aggressive tweets aimed at the American. He stated that his team ensures that all his charity donations are processed, and that he would regret testing his generosity for charitable causes. He ended by claiming that Poirier would be in trouble when he gets his hands on him. That could be a slight issue if McGregor has actually cancelled the fight between the two later in the year.
UFC News: Could The Fight Still Happen?
There had been high hopes that the fight would go ahead this year, with Dana White revealing a couple of weeks ago that the trilogy bout would be taking place in Las Vegas at UFC 264. That date looks doubtful now given the strong exchange between the two fighters on social media, but we will know more later in the week when White speaks to the world’s media ahead of the Fight Night card this weekend.
Of course, there is still hope that the fight will go ahead, as White will be keen to get both men in the octagon to settle their difference. However, the build is already different from what we saw between the two earlier in the year, as there was a mutual respect between McGregor and Poirier on that occasion.
