All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Dynamite is currently the only major wrestling show on Wednesday nights. After sharing the same night and time slot with WWE NXT for over a year, things finally became simpler when NXT was forced to move to Tuesday nights due to NHL broadcasts moving to the USA Network. However, the NHL might not be done messing around with wrestling time slots. AEW Dynamite could be next to move.
NHL Also Got A Deal With Turner Broadcasting
NHL will be airing games on Turner Broadcasting as well, with the question being if they will air on TBS or TNT. Details are still up in the air, with that being the uncertain part when it comes to AEW. If it’s decided that NHL goes to TNT, it’s very likely the AEW Dynamite will not remain on Wednesday nights. Wednesday nights have historically been used for big NHL games, so Dynamite would be moved.
When it comes to what day AEW Dynamite would move to in this case, it’s pretty easy. NBA games are generally held on Tuesday & Thursday nights, and it’d be odd for Tony Khan to want to compete with the NFL on Monday Nights. This just leaves Friday night, but that would lead to an interesting new war.
AEW Dynamite Could End Up Head To Head With Smackdown
So soon after being done with their war with WWE NXT, it could be time to get back to the ratings game with another WWE program. If AEW Dynamite moves to Friday Night due to this NHL deal, it would put them head to head with WWE’s very own Smackdown Live. This is arguably a better match up, as AEW & NXT really didn’t have much in common outside of an indy influenced style.
Smackdown Live has been the flagship show of WWE since the Fox deal began, and Dynamite is obviously the flagship show of AEW. They’re both touring brands in better times with top tier rosters, while NXT is more or less the third brand of WWE. Smackdown & Dynamite could be a very interesting ratings war.
Putting matches of Roman Reigns & Kenny Omega on at the same time would truly show us a lot about fans. It could also help us get Smackdown Live & Dynamite to become even better shows, with both already among the best shows that wrestling offers weekly.
