The COVID-19 pandemic killed off a good chunk of independent wrestling promotions. However, one was always going to rise back up. Pro Wrestling Guerilla has often been one of the top promotions for many fans, though it’s been a long time since their last show. PWG The Makings Of A Varsity Athlete came in December 2019, and that was their last show to date. However, it’s time to get back in action, with their return show now confirmed.
Pro Wrestling Guerilla Returns On August 1st, 2021
Announced on Twitter by their official account, PWG would let everyone know that their return show is quickly arriving. It’ll be on August 1st, 2021, likely at their new home of the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles, California, USA. No matches or talent have been announced, but this show will likely sell out in minutes.
A lot of the frequent talent we’d usually see from PWG have been signed to major companies, including both their world and tag team champions. We can expect some AEW talent to show up, as Excalibur is one of the owners of PWG, and names like Best Friends, Dark Order, Lucha Bros, Young Bucks and more are all former frequent fliers in PWG. Bandido should be able to appear with him being the PWG World Champion, and ROH having generally been okay with talent working elsewhere.
New Tag Team Champions Will Likely Be Needed
However, we will likely see the PWG Tag Team Championships be left vacant. The champions before they shut down were Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz, now known as the NXT Tag Team Champions, MSK. WWE aren’t known for letting their talent work elsewhere, unlike ROH.
With PWG likely being able to make good use of the AEW Tag Team division, we could see the belts end up on a team like Young Bucks or Best Friends, both being safe options. We could even see a DDT4 tournament, something we haven’t seen since 2015. It’s their tag team tournament, and that would be both a great way to get things restarted and crown new champions.
