Chan Sung Jung will star in a main event fight for the eighth time in his career. This time, he will be facing Dan Ige in an explosive 145-pound bout.
This Saturday, Jung and Ige will headline the night of UFC Vegas 29, and will be the last fighters to step into the octagon at the Apex.
Chan Sung Jung declares himself ready for a war with Dan Ige
In the red corner will be Chan Sung Jung, ranked #4 in the featherweight rankings. The Korean returns to action after suffering a unanimous decision loss last October to current featherweight belt challenger Brian Ortega. Prior to this loss, he had racked up two incredible wins in a row. Both finishes in the first round, by TKO against Renato Moicano, and by KO against Frankie Edgar.
In the blue corner, Dan Ige ’50K’, is ranked #8 in the division. His last submission in the cage was a spectacular KO win over Gavin Tucker, early in the first round. And prior to being stopped by Calvin Kattar in July 2020, he had reeled off six consecutive wins inside the promotion.
Both established featherweight contenders will duel in search of a victory that will put them in the conversation for the crown.
For his part, ‘The Korean Zombie’ in dialogues with the press, talked about his preparation for this fight, his rival and his future at 145 pounds.
“The main focus of this camp was conditioning, that is, handling pressure and time. We worked on trying to make the camp more enjoyable and not so intense, so we can have a better performance on Saturday.”
Counting this upcoming event, Chan Sung Jung, will have now starred eight times on a bill. The first time, it happened in 2013, in his only headlining opportunity. He faced the feather division monarch at the time, Jose Aldo. Unfortunately for his cause, he was unable to defeat the Brazilian and fell in the fourth round by TKO.
After that unsuccessful championship fight, the Korean fighter would have to temporarily retire from the sport. After fulfilling his military obligations, nearly four years later, he would return to mixed martial arts in UFC.
“I asked for three-round co-main events, but they didn’t give it to me, I was a little bit bummed about that. But there’s also a good part about being the co-main event fight. You get a lot more attention, a little more money and a few more things. But I definitely wanted a three-round fight.”
About his opponent, Dan Ige, he recognizes his qualities and his aggressive fighting style. So he says he is prepared to get involved in a war, if necessary.
“He is a very complete fighter. He likes to go to fight, he is aggressive which makes the fight entertaining. I’m very sorry, but I only knew who Ige was when he fought Kattar. Dan is a fighter who likes to go to the brawl, and if he wants to do that, he will more than welcome that kind of fight. A lot of people were saying that about Ortega too, I was ready for that and it never happened. So we’ll see what happens.”
‘The Korean Zombie‘ with his mind clearly set on getting a title shot, knows the impact of this fight on his goal.
“I definitely look at the rankings, I think I’m still in consideration for a title fight. My goal is to win a championship. And if for some strange reason I lose this fight, then maybe I’ll just be an exciting fighter.”
