Team Taz is no longer fine, as Taz has completely lost control of his first client Brian Cage. This means he’s also lost the FTW Championship, something which he hopes to reclaim tonight. Ricky Starks is stepping up to the plate to try and take Cage down, and bring the FTW Championship home. It’s a daunting task to defeat someone like Cage, but Starks knows exactly what Cage is capable of, and hopefully how to take him down.
Both Men Target Known Injuries
Starks is just back after a serious neck injury, and Cage knows this. He’d go right for the neck with some punches before nailing a massive press slam into the mat. Starks was thrown pillar to post, before he’d flop up onto the top rope, where Cage kicked him up and he’d crash down crotch first onto the ropes. Cage took him down into a powerslam, getting the two count.
Starks would dodge a shoulder tackle, and Cage crashed into the ring post. The bicep would be targeted by Starks, before Starks nailed a missile dropkick to drop Cage to the mat. Starks would now focus fully on that hurt limb, bending away before biting the fingers of Cage. Taz would comment that Cage’s fingers likely just taste like Whey protein.
Starks would nail a running boot, before tying up the arm in the ropes. This is a smart gameplan, as it both breaks Cage down and protects his neck. Cage tried to break free, but Starks caught him into a roll up. The kick out sent Starks to the apron, and he’d dive back in with a crossbody, only to be caught by Cage.
Team Taz Screws Brian Cage
Cage would play around and do some bicep curls, and Starks nailed a crucifix bomb for a two count. Starks was sent to the outside with a shoulder tackle, before grabbing the FTW Championship. Cage disarmed him and put the belt into the ring, before trying to throw Starks into the ring post. Starks seamlessly slipped under the ropes and came back with a lariat on the outside.
Back in the ring, Starks would apply a rear naked choke before Cage drove him back into the turnbuckle. Cage would set up and nail Weapon-X, but Starks got a foot on the bottom rope. Starks would battle out of an F5 attempt, but took a superkick for a two count. Cage would catch Starks onto the apron and look for the superplex to the ring but Starks countered. Starks walked Cage into the middle of the ring and nailed a massive powerbomb for a near fall.
Powerhouse Hobbs would prevent Starks from trying to use the championship as a weapon, and he’d walk right into a F5 from Cage. He’d manage to kick out at two, and Hook would distract the referee. Hobbs would deck Cage with the FTW Championship, and Starks ran him down with a spear to win this outlaw championship.
This was an incredible match from two of the best AEW has to offer, and perhaps the best match we’ve ever seen over the FTW Championship. The finish was a shock, and shows that this Team Taz storyline still has some steam. Match Rating: 3.75/5 (*** 3/4)
