Right now, WWE & Peacock are promoting the next episode of their WWE Icons series. Previous episodes covered the lives and careers of three Hall of Fame members, those being Yokozuna, Beth Phoenix and Rob Van Dam. However, that will change with the next episode, despite its subject being worthy of that honor. The next episode is about Lex Luger, and could it finally lead to a push to get him inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame?
Lex Luger Was An Important Player In One Of Wrestling’s Greatest Era’s
When most fans think of Lex Luger, it’s usually one of two moments. The time he power slammed Yokozuna in 1993 on the USS Intrepid and kicked off his cross country tour in the Lex Express, or when he crossed company lines to appear on the first episode of WCW Nitro. The second of those was considered to be the first major shot fired by WCW during the Monday Night Wars, and he did it under the nose of Vince McMahon, having just worked a house show in New Brunswick a day earlier.
He would go on to be a somewhat major player in WCW, even defeating Hulk Hogan for the WCW Championship at the height of the popularity of the nWo. Overall, he became a WCW Triple Crown Champion, the second to ever accomplish that behind Ric Flair. He never claimed a single champion in WWE however, despite having challenged for all active championships during his tenure.
Didn’t Accomplish Much In WWE, But Other WCW Talents Have Been Honored
His lack of accomplishments within WWE will be enough for some fans to claim he wouldn’t belong in the WWE Hall of Fame. This is regardless of the fact WWE just inducted the nWo, Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger, and previously Harlem Heat & even Abdullah the Butcher, with the last three having done next to nothing in WWE.
Luger is even on good terms with WWE, having worked with them since 2011 on their Wellness Policy. He is one of the last big names from the late 80’s and 90’s who hasn’t yet been put into the Hall of Fame, and doesn’t have anything really holding him back like Owen Hart.
