New Japan Pro Wrestling is potentially going to hit yet another bump in the road on their hopes to run a show in the Tokyo Dome this year, thanks to a new State of Emergency being declared. Despite this, talent is remaining hopeful this event can happen, and one name in Taichi is looking past his next IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship match against Tetsuya Naito & SANADA, to a pair of aces. Taichi has laid down a potential challenge to Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kazuchika Okada for the Tokyo Dome.
Taichi Wants To Elevate The Tag Team Division
Taichi would lay down the challenge which was confirmed by an article in Tokyo Sports. His goal in challenging the in-frequent team of Tanahashi & Okada is to help boost the tag team division once again. It is no secret that the division is in a sad state, having mainly consisted of endless matches which saw Dangerous Tekkees (Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr.) take on Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa).
The upcoming main event match at Summer Struggle between Dangerous Tekkers and the L.I.J unit of SANADA & Tetsuya Naito is a breath of fresh air. and Getting Tanahashi & Okada to become a more frequent tag team would only help. They’ve previously teamed together, but never for the championships.
Wanting To Do The Holy Demon Army Proud
Another reason Taichi wants to do this is to have a major tag team match in the Tokyo Dome infront of his mentor. Taichi was trained by AJPW legend Toshiaki Kawada, who spent a bulk of his career teaming with Akira Taue. Alongside Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi, they were known as the Four Pillars of Heaven, and a major reason AJPW was so popular in the 90’s.
In the TokyoSports article, as translated by DeepL, we’d find the following. “Taichi is also looking forward to defending his title at Tokyo Dome after the Sapporo match. This would be the perfect stage to host the “Holy Demon Army” that he has always wanted to fight, but at this point, there has been no response from either fighter.
