The first edition of Wrestle Grand Slam was a success for NJPW, despite the lack of a big crowd in the Tokyo Dome. They held an incredible card, including two instant classics with the IWGP Tag Team Championship & IWGP World Heavyweight Championship matches. However, that isn’t the only show that will take the Wrestle Grand Slam title, as on September 5th, they enter another baseball stadium for another major card, and we already know the three major matches.
Shingo Takagi Looks To Make Defense #2 Of The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship
The main event will of course be Shingo Takagi defending the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship once again. He was able to defeat Hiroshi Tanahashi in his Tokyo Dome main event debut, the first to win a main event on their first try since Brock Lesnar in 2005. However, after the match he would be called out and beaten down by former Los Ingobernables De Japón member EVIL.
While the initial challenge was rather heatless aside from a questionable word choice from EVIL, they have 6 weeks to build this match and EVIL as a steady contender once again. He is a former champion, albeit the worst received IWGP Heavyweight Champion in recent history. It could become a solid main event, but doesn’t seem like a showstealer.
Two Potential Show Stealing Matches
However, the coming IWGP Tag Team Championship match could steal any show. Dangerous Tekkers regained the championships in a 37 minute epic over Tetsuya Naito & SANADA, and after the bell, YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto would make the challenge. This has built up into a three way tag team match, and given the insane quality of the encounter of L.I.J & Tekkers? It is an instant classic in the making.
The third announced match could be equally as huge, and could steal the show. Robbie Eagles became the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion in Tokyo Dome, and now he has to defend against a man who never lost the belt. Hiromu Takahashi is cleared to return to the ring, and will look to claim the title in the debut defense of Eagles. It’s going to be interesting to see if Eagles can win, but it might be a short reign.
