We already know one of the teams in the finals of the impromptu tag team tournament, when Jurassic Express got a huge win on AEW Rampage. Tonight, they find out their opponents as Varisty Blondes take on Lucha Bros in tag team action. Lucha Bros would love another crack at The Young Bucks, and have yet to have them in a Steel Cage. Blondes are ranked #1 and Lucha Bros are ranked #3, but only one will move onto Jurassic Express!
Brian Pillman Jr. Steps Into An Arena His Dad Once Lit Up
Griff would start alongside Rey Fenix, and catch a springboard dive into an attempt at a Fallaway Slam. Fenix landed on his feet and went for an impressive arm drag off the ropes, before Griff blocked him again. Pillman & Penta tagged in, and he’d take the ring in the same building where his dad wrestled Jushin Thunder Liger. They’d trade superkicks, before Pillman hit a running hurricanrana and got planted with a slingblade.
Penta hit one of his signature overhand chops, before Pillman took a lungblower and diving senton bomb off the top rope from Rey Fenix. Pillman would be able to get the tag to Griff, and hit an assisted spinebuster with a dropkick for a two count. Griff applied a chinlock and would make a tag with his foot to get Pillman in for a double suplex attempt.
Lucha Bros Take The Win
Fenix would go for a jawbreaker to get free before getting Penta back into the match. Penta hit some overhand chops, but Pillman would maintain control until a big DDT was nailed. The Young Bucks & Jurassic Express were looking on, as Fenix would kick Pillman in the face with a springboard dropkick. A roll into a cutter would get a pinfall to two before Griff broke things up.
Penta would look to take Griff out with the Fear Factor, only to take a triangle dropkick from Pillman. Pillman wanted to dive to the outside but Fenix pulled him outside for a double superkick, before Fenix nailed a massive dive. Back in the ring, Pillman was able to counter a dive into a powerbomb, but Penta wasn’t letting this one end. Penta nailed a series of superkicks with Fenix, before they’d nail a Super Fear Factor for the win.
A chaotic and back and forth tag team match, which saw two of the best teams in AEW thrive with a big crowd. Brian Pillman & Griff Garrison showed some amatuer mistakes, which was all that cost them in this match. Lucha Bros are finally getting some steam in the tag division, which is awesome to see. Match Rating: 3.75/5 (*** 3/4)
