We thought we would have to wait until All Out to see Christian Cage lock up with Kenny Omega, but Christian had other plans. Instead, he gave a call to Scott D’Amore of Impact Wrestling to set up a huge match for this debut episode of AEW Rampage. Christian will take on Kenny Omega for the Impact Wrestling World Championship tonight, and then again at All Out for the AEW World Championship. Can Christian claim two world championships in rapid succession?
Huge Match Feel
This one has a 30 minute time limit, which is a very real possibility between these two top level athletes. Truly two of Canada’s best. Omega came to the ring draped in gold, but only the Impact Wrestling World Championship is on the line. Don Callis was at ringside, and there was a big match feel before they even locked horns.
The opening lockup saw Christian corner Omega, and after the break was ready to follow up. Christian grabbed a headlock, and Omega shoved him off into a shoulder tackle, taking Omega down. A middle finger salute from Chrisian only fired Omega and the crowd up more, and Omega would nail some quick strikes in response.
Omega would go for One Winged Angel early, and Christian countered into an attempt at the Killswitch. Christian would follow Omega to the outside, but lost the high ground which allowed Omega to regain control. Omega would send Christian to the outside but couldn’t get the dive, and Christian adapted to hit a dropkick. Christian would head to the top rope, but a distraction from Don Callis saw Omega shove him out to the floor.
Omega would isolate Christian on the mat with some measured stomps before a flashing elbow for a one count. They were both pacing themselves, with Christian down before he snuck a two count off a small package as Omega was getting cocky and playing to the crowd. Christian would fight to his feet and nail a snap suplex, before Omega clawed away at the eyes of him to get him into the corner.
Christian Cage Shows His Veteran Skills
They’d be put onto the top rope, with Christian able to fight off a superplex and nail a huge sunset flip powerbomb. Some downward punches in the corner pummeled Omega to the delight of the crowd, before a signature choke on the ropes before a slap. A diving uppercut finally saw Christian go for a pinfall, but got a two count. Christian went into a killswitch but Omega countered and hit the You Can’t Escape combo for a two count.
Omega looked for the Fisherman Buster, but Christian countered into a reverse DDT. Christian dashed in for a spear but took a knee to the face, before a powerbomb and a V-Trigger for a near fall. Omega would look for One Winged Angel but Christian fought free. He’d dodge a V-Trigger and nail a spear for a two count. Omega got back into it with a snap dragon suplex, and doubled down with a second.
The V-Trigger was set, but Christian slipped to the outside and hit a reverse hotshot and the frog splash for another two count. Omega would rely on a distraction from Callis to nail a low blow. Young Bucks brought a chair to the ring, and looked for a One Winged Angel onto the chair. Instead, Christian countered into Killswitch for the win!
An incredibly solid match to kick off this brand new show, but it felt like Omega & Christian were holding back for their match at All Out. Christian winning was a huge shock, as well as a feel good moment. Match Rating: 3.75/5 (*** 3/4)
