Right now is one of the biggest times in the short history of All Elite Wrestling. They recently added a second televised show to their weekly lineup with AEW Rampage, increasing their TV time by 50%. Add in them bringing CM Punk back to wrestling, and potentially having Daniel Bryan, Bray Wyatt, and possibly even Sami Zayn signing soon? Things are getting packed. This makes taping a show like AEW Dark a bit of a tricky situation, but it’s one that AEW might have an answer too, and it’s one that might bring back some nostalgia.
AEW Dark To Become A Studio Based Show?
With AEW Rampage sometimes needing to be taped on the same day as Dynamite airs live, AEW have to avoid burning their talent – and fans out. A five hour show is fun in theory, but WWE PPV’s have proved that’s not always the greatest idea. Because of this, the idea is that AEW might tape Dark or Dark: Elevation elsewhere, in a studio setting. This was first reported by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer newsletter.
However, the location was given more of an idea by Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Podcast, who heard that the possible new home for AEW Dark will be at Universal Studios in Orlando. This was where TNA Impact was shot for many years, and we could see a very similar setup come into play for AEW Dark.
Fans Will Still Tune In, So Long As The Tone Remains The Same
This is possibly the best way to do a show like AEW Dark as well. They can fly talent out to the studio once a month, bring in some indy talents, and do a few days of batch tapings. AEW Dark is an important show with how their rating system works, with wrestlers tending to farm wins on Dark to boost their ranking spot. However, fans more watch for the commentary goodness of Excalibur and Taz, with it feeling more like an unhinged podcast most of the time.
The matches are important, but very few people watch for the results. AEW Dark is more of an experience to behold than anything, making the potential for spoilers leaking not much of a big deal. Fans will still fun in, and a batch taped studio show would be able to have it’s own more unique identity, rather than feeling like Dynamite-lite.
