Ever since Brian Johnson started to climb his way up the ROH rankings, it has truly been Mecca vs. Everyone. He has taken on all comers, even taking former ROH World Champion PCO to his limits a few months back. However, tonight he will match up against EC3, who might be one of his hardest challenges yet. This is a former World Champion who is in his prime, and the best shape of his career, and will be looking to shut Johnson up.
Brian Johnson Falls To EC3
Due to issues with HonorClub, I hopped into this match midway through. Johnson was having his hand stomped out by EC3, before being hit with an angle slam. We’ve been seeing a more cerebral EC3 as of late, and this was shown. However, Johnson was on home turf here and would fire up to hit some slaps.
EC3 kept going however, before being hit with a low blow as the referee looked away. A roll up got a two count, before EC3 hit an armbreaker and applied The Purpose. He’d slam the hand on Johnson off the mat for more damage before reapplying and getting the submission win, to the dismay of the crowd. Johnson would get on his feet as the crowd erupted, getting that hometown love at least.
Mark Briscoe Fights Alone Tonight
Originally set to be a tag team match between The Briscoes & The Righteous, this would morph into a singles match. They’d note that someone failed a COVID-19 test, with that either being Jay Briscoe. This puts us with just Mark Briscoe & Bateman, a singles match that still shows potential.
Dutch would back Bateman, but Mark was running alone. They’d lock up, before Mark would toss some chops. Bateman used his size to drive Mark down, before taking a flying forearm before hitting a running lariat. The crowd was firmly behind Mark, who showed his funky chicken kung fu style before a vertical drop brainbuster.
Both men back to their feet, they’d throw heavy handed chops before Bateman would no longer be the focus. Mark dove out onto Dutch, and was thrown into the barricade behind the back of the referee. Bateman hit a big knee strike, before getting Mark back in the ring. Mark would manage to get Bateman on the top turnbuckle, pulling him down into an Iconoclasm.
Mark would follow up with an exploder suplex, before taking a backdrop driver. They’d trade blows in the middle of the ring, before Mark hit a Death Valley Driver and Froggy Bow for the win.
For a last minute match, this was fine. Mark & Bateman did their best, and they got to protect Dutch by still allowing him to brutalize some folks. Match Rating: 2/5 (**)
