For many years, The Briscoes were considered to be one of the greatest tag teams in the world. Despite never appearing on WWE programming, they were a well known team – and a pillar of Ring of Honor.
However, their time as a tag team was cut tragically short, when Jay Briscoe would be involved in a car crash in 2022, ending his life. This left Mark Briscoe without his brother for the first time in professional wrestling, and he briefly considered retirement as a result.
Mark Briscoe Considered Retirement, But Knew That’s Not What Jay Would Have Wanted
While appearing on the AEW Unrestricted podcast, Mark Briscoe would briefly touch on how he felt after the passing of Jay – and how he considered retirement. Briscoe had the following to say.
You know, when it first happened, I was almost like, “Well, I don’t know if I ever want to wrestle again.” And then as the hours go, it’s almost like, “Shit, Jamin will be pissed if I…” You know what I mean? If I hung up the boots now, he’d be mad as hell.”
Pressing On As A Singles Star
Mark has carried on the legacy of the Briscoes in ROH and even has appeared on AEW programming. Jay was honored at ROH Supercard of Honor 2023 with the Reach For The Sky ladder match, which was won by The Lucha Bros. Mark had challenged Samoa Joe for the ROH World Television Championship the same night, but was unable to score the victory.
Plans had placed Mark against ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli for Death Before Dishonor, but an injury kept Mark out of the ring. Castagnoli instead defended against PAC in the semi-main event, leaving the spotlight for Willow Nightingale & Athena in the main event spot.
It’s likely ROH goes back to Mark vs. Castagnoli later this year for Final Battle, with Mark being earmarked to end the second reign of Castagnoli.
