Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis, contender for the UFC heavyweight title, has declared his next opponent “boring” leading up to their interim title bout.
The two will clash next month at UFC 265, headlining the main card on August 7 in Lewis’ home state of Texas. Derrick Lewis doesn’t exactly have a reputation for mincing words, and was typically forthright regarding the upcoming interim title bout.
Gane is “boring”: Lewis on his next opponent
In comments made to reporters, Lewis revealed his opinion regarding his next opponent. “I don’t care who it was. Ciryl Gane, he’s a good opponent, he’s dangerous. He’s boring most of the time, but he’s smart.
He’s a smart fighter, so it’s still gonna be a fun fight with me. It doesn’t matter if he’s gonna try and stay away and do all these little fancy kicks and stuff like that, but I’m still gonna have my moment in the fight”
Derrick Lewis’ “moment” in the fight will likely be a vicious knockout. Lewis has 25 MMA wins to his name, of which a massive 20 came via knockout. That’s 80% of Derrick Lewis’ victories, including his last two wins. Lewis is on a four-fight win streak, and has his sights set on challenging Francis Ngannou once again.
Lewis and Ngannou infamously fought once before, in one of the most controversial heavyweight fights in UFC history. The two men circled each other for the entire fight, neither committing to any strikes, and eventually threw the fewest strikes ever recorded in a UFC bout. Lewis was supposedly set to challenge Ngannou once again, but instead will fight Gane for the interim title.
Cyril Gane is a talented kickboxer with an undefeated record in mixed martial arts. His striking is far more clinical and technical than many other heavyweights, which has thus far given the Frenchman an edge in the division.
Lewis, however, is unfazed, and happy to get paid. “I really don’t care.
They told me what I’m getting paid if I’m fighting Francis, and they told me what I’m going to be paid if I fight Ciryl, so it doesn’t matter to me, so I don’t care.
I’m still getting paid the same like I was getting paid to fight Francis.” Do you agree with Derrick Lewis? Is Ciryl Gane a boring fighter? Will Lewis win the interim title he has been chasing for so long and eventually fight Francis Ngannou once again, or will Ciryl Gane’s undefeated streak continue? Let us know in the comments.
