When MJF insulted the family of Brian Pillman Jr. in his hometown of Cincinnati, this became one of the most personal feuds in AEW’s history very quickly. You don’t claim someone’s father is down in hell without getting a punch in the face. Tonight, Pillman has the chance for payback in his biggest match ever, and we might see him embody the Loose Cannon spirit for this one.
Brian Pillman Jr. Starts This One Hot
MJF of course brought Wardlow to the ring with him tonight, and demanded to be announced twice. Brian Pillman Jr. brought Julia Hart, who could really take Wardlow any night. MJF offered a handshake, but Pillman instead got a double leg and took MJF down. Some quick strikes sent MJF cowering into the corner, where the referee tried to separate both men.
A thumb to the eye got MJF a bit of an edge, before taking a hip toss and back body drop. MJF tried for a back body drop and took a kick to the face, before Pillman did the same thing and outsmarted MJF. Pillman hit a punch to the face, sending MJF into the corner where Pillman was tripped into the turnbuckle.
MJF Catches Air Pillman
A sunset flip got a two count, and MJF tried to slip into Salt of The Earth, having to settle for an arm wringer instead. MJF would trap the arm in a hammerlock for a backdrop, before counting to focus on the arm. Wardlow got a cheap shot in, with Julia Hart failing to intimidate him into staying out of the match. Pillman got back into the fight with a flying crossbody, but landed on the arm.
He’d fight free and slam MJF head first off the top turnbuckle pad, before a snap powerslam for a two count. Pillman wanted a dive, but MJF would use Julia Hart as a shield. She’d throw the pom poms down, and distract MJF as Pillman hit a huge flying dropkick. Air Pillman was countered into Salt of The Earth, and MJF got the win.
A very simple face vs. heel match, with both men playing their roles well. MJF is high above Pillman in terms of skill, but Pillman held his own. They stuck to a very fundamental style of match, very much a cool down after Omega vs. Danielson and a fiery CM Punk promo. Match Rating: 3/5 (***)
