AEW is doing many things right with pushing the right wrestler to the top, not giving new wrestlers from other companies a chance at a championship as soon as they come to the company and sign the right people. But, there is always room for improvement. There is one story trope that is used a lot through AEW, this being the retirement story.
It’s obvious that wrestlers are going to come to the end of their day and one day retires, but the fact is how much we see in AEW. It feels like it’s starting to become overdone. In the last couple of months alone, we have seen FTR, Jericho and Cody Rhodes all tease or mention their retirement in the story. Making it feel like it’s starting to become overdone.
There’s a time and a place
There has to be a payoff for these stories too, and a retirement tease can’t be forgotten. It’sIt’s sad to see great wrestlers like Chris Jericho, Cody Rhodes and FTR retire, but if it’s mentioned in the story and the build-up isn’t to retirement, there is no point. That means that at the end of the story, we will see the retirement of whoever wrestler mentions it. It will be a sad moment to see them go, but if it’s mentioned, it needs a payoff. AEW has pushed themselves to expect to pay off to their stories, and if a story is built to that. We need to see that sadly.
Once a year, at least
The company has only been around for two years. The number of retirement teases could be compared to the DQ ending in WWE. It’sIt’s very overused, and in comparison, it could be seen as a similar thing. If it is used more times this year, it’s going to be hard to take seriously if there is no payoff. But, there is also the other side of the coin, and if the story does have the payoff of retiring. We will see too many retirements of wrestlers, and it won’t feel that important. There needs to be a balance, and at the moment, we don’t see it.
