Since Ring of Honor made their comeback in 2020, their Pure Rules division has been a constant highlight for fans. A focus on sound technical wrestling is what ROH was built upon, and with men like Jonathan Gresham & Josh Woods at the top of the mountain – it’s been fantastic. This week on ROH TV, the Pure Division took the spotlight, with two big matches.
Brian Johnson Is Now A Pure Wrestler?
First up was a Pure Rules Gauntlet match. ROH has done a few of these, and the combination of the pure rules and endurance nature of a gauntlet match makes this truly interesting every time. Eric Martin of the ROH Dojo and World Famous CB started the match, with CB playing things smart and forcing Martin to use all three rope breaks within the first two minutes. Submission was applied, and Martin had to tap out.
Delirious was out next, the man who trained CB. He’d have an aggressive start, and was able to take down a tired CB. What got CB tapping was a Cobra Clutch that morphed into a deadly Kimura, bending the arm of CB unnaturally. LSG was out next, and while Delirious was on fire tonight, LSG was able to catch hit with a modified Muta Lock for the win.
Another ROH Dojo member was out next in Joe Keys, who gets better with every single match. Keys was able to push hard against LSG, and would have LSG run out of rope breaks. LSG got a counter off a superplex to get the win, but was spent. Out last was Brian Johnson, who is new to the Pure Division, and he’d use the one Closed Fist Punch that Pure Rules matches allow, and use LSG’s lack of rope breaks to put his feet on the ropes for leverage. Easy win for Johnson!
Mike Bennett Outwrestled Rhett Titus
During the incredible ROH Pure Title reign of Jonathan Gresham, both Mike Bennett & Rhett Titus got shots on PPV. They’d take Gresham to the limit but fell, and tonight they meet each other. Two of the best technical wrestlers in the business today in a pure match is what makes ROH so great. They’d go back and forth with control early on, using their rope breaks smartly.
Bennett would target the hurt leg of Titus, and this stopped some big offense late in the match. As the match reached the end they were still neck and neck, with Bennett using up all three rope breaks. However when the 15 minute time limit came, Bennett was given the win by the judges due to landing more strike and submission attempts. It was a fair fight until the end, and one ROH should give another go.
