When two time tag team champion Buddy Murphy was released from WWE, everyone instantly knew where they wanted to see him show up. He was practically tailor made for New Japan Pro Wrestling – and even based some of his offense around that of former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega. Up until now, we only had rumors of him joining the NJPW roster – namely Will Ospreay teasing him as a new member of the United Empire. However, a new video from NJPW shows that fans can expect the Best Kept Secret on November 13th.
The Next Chapter Of Buddy Matthews Will Be Written In NJPW
A thick australian voice would greet viewers as they clicked the video, and the following would be said. “They say as one door closes, another door opens. As much as things change, things stay the same. Look, I’m no saint. I’ve done bad things, in someone else’s vision. – believing it was for a greater good. But maybe there is no place in this world for me. Maybe I’m done, maybe it’s time to leave, maybe it’s time to close this chapter of my life. Or maybe, it was staring at me the entire time.”
That last line came as a poster for Battle In The Valley came into view, before the face of Buddy Matthews was shown. We got some cliche promo work here, but references to the character he played as the Disciple of Seth Rollins was some nice interpromotional kayfabe. It even plays into the character of AEW’s Malakai Black – who he injured the eye of in WWE.
No Best Of The Super Juniors For Him
The timing sadly means we will not be seeing Buddy Matthews in the Best of The Super Juniors tournament this year. That tournament which will run side by side to World Tag League starts on the same night on the other side of the world – as Matthews starts in New Japan Pro Wrestling of America.
It’s unclear if he will even wrestle as a Junior Heavyweight, given that he has bulked up since being WWE Cruiserweight Champion. Hopefully over the coming weeks, we can get more information on his opponent for this coming show.
