Retired UFC star and legend of combat sports Chuck Liddell has filed for divorce from his wife of ten years. It was only last week that Lidell was arrested following an altercation at their family home.
According to TMZ, Liddell filed for “dissolution w/ minor children” at an LA courthouse this Friday. After Liddell was arrested, he posted bail, and claimed on Instagram that he was the victim, not the perpetrator, of the assault. Liddell posted at the time:
Chuck Liddell Files for Divorce Just Days After Domestic Violence Arrest
“Last night the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies who responded were professional. While the information about this case will be revealed in due course, I believe it is important to convey and clarify a few facts about the situation.
“I was the victim of the incident last night at our family home, as details of the case will reveal. The deputies informed me that my wife would be arrested, as I did not respond to her assault while I sustained bruising and lacerations. I volunteered to go in her place.
This was one of the many times I have tried to shield a family mental health issue from the public purview. It has become painfully apparent that this cannot continue, as our private life has now reached a public breaking point. Please respect our privacy as I help to navigate our family through this difficult time.”
Liddell claimed that he had volunteered to go to jail instead of his wife so she could remain at home with their child.
Once upon a time, Chuck Liddell was one of, if not the biggest, stars in the MMA world. His mohawk haircut, foreboding six-foot-plus frame and penchant for spectacular knockouts made him a fixture of the 2000s MMA world. He was inducted into the UFC hall of fame in 2009, marrying his wife Heidi two years later.
Chuck Liddell was nicknamed “The Iceman” thanks to his cool, calm temperament leading up to fights. As a young kickboxer, he showed no anxiety or nervousness before taking on his opponents, leading his coach to claim Liddell had “ice in his veins”.
A title loss in 2007 precipitated the end of Liddell’s career. Although he fought for another three years, and then again in 2018, Chuck Liddell embarked upon a lengthy losing streak that ultimately led to his retirement.
