Jay Lethal was a name that fans were not expecting at Full Gear. The former Ring of Honor World Champion is all elite, and has wasted little time trying to gain gold in a new company. Lethal has called on the Open Challenge of the TNT Championship. Now, he will make his AEW debut with a chance to take the belt from Sammy Guevara – and pave a path in AEW worthy of his legacy.
Sammy Guevara Is Far From 100% After Full Gear
With a theme song that paid homage to the Macho Man himself before blasting off into something unique – Lethal hit the ring with purpose. Guevara got a rather muted reaction from the crowd, and would hope to leave with the championship. The waist lock would see Lethal counter out, but Lethal Injection was almost blocked into the GTH. Figure Four was blocked into a roll up, and we were seeing some great counter wrestling.
Lethal hit the hip toss into a dropkick, before getting into an attack on the ribs. Guevara to his credit wouldn’t slow down, sending Lethal to the outside and hitting a dive. Back in the ring, he wanted a Shooting Star Press – but met the knees of Lethal instead. Guevara would roll to the outside, and was almost too hurt to get to his feet. He took body shots from Junior Dos Santos on Saturday night, and things were not looking good.
Doc Sampson would come check on Guevara, and things were looking bad – but Guevara wanted to keep going. Lethal stuck in the ring, and waited for Guevara to hopefully get in and finish this one. He was helped to his feet, but got into the ring and Guevara would take a cheap shot on Lethal to get this one back it’s fire.
No Quit In The TNT Champion
Lethal launched Guevara into the sky for a flapjack, but failed to get the Lethal Injection again. Guevara hit a desperate Spanish Fly, before being sent to the floor. He’d block a dive into a brainbuster on the floor. A knee strike sent Lethal onto the timekeeper’s table, and Guevara would come off the top rope and crash through the table.
Back in the ring, Lethal nailed Hail to the King, but Guevara got a flash roll up for two. Lethal would take a thrust kick but came back with a chop block. A big facebuster was followed by the Figure Four Leg Lock. Guevara would counter out, and nailed a rushing knee strike. He was able to avoid the Dragon Suplex, and hit another knee strike.
Finally he’d power Lethal up however, using all the power his body had left to hit the knee strike to get the win. After the match, Inner Circle came down to celebrate the successful defense.
A chaotic main event, and one built around the injured ribs of Guevara – which made things slow and plodding until the final stretch. The action was good in the end, but fell far below expectations. Match Rating: 2.75/5 (** 3/4)
