We’re checking out episode five of Heels: “Swerve” and what an apt name it is for this one. We have a bunch of stories going down rapidly as the second half of the episode is heavy on a big event.
Ring the bell!
“Sometimes When You Drink Blurt, You Hurt” – Wild Bill
The first part of the episode moves through different stories pretty damn briskly. We have Crystal running through a promo in the cage for the next show’s main event.
Even though Jack loved the promo, Ace is being snotty about it and dismisses his performance. Diego and Rooster want to discuss some creative with Jack but now they’re going over the main event spot. While going over the spot for the match, Willie gets a call from the state fairground commission about running a show there.
It’s a big deal for the DWL, obviously. The DWL Dome only holds 200 or so people. This is a 10,000-seat venue. Wild Bill does his press conference which is good for a heel promo but his agent wasn’t with it.
He later talks to Jack about helping with the DWL but he wants nothing to do with him after hearing about what he said to Willie. Jack later tells the DWL crew that they will have important people from the state fairgrounds at the next show.
Bobby Pin and Crystal have gotten closer as friends. He’s stoked that she won at gambling and was able to buy a new outfit for the main event.
Ace notices Bobby and Crystal together and has shown up with the bartender from the previous episode. They’re late because she wanted Church’s Chicken—which is delicious.
Staci starts her new job at the grocery store and has an uncomfortable conversation with Wild Bill…because every conversation with him is uncomfortable. While running through the battle royal with the guys, Crystal and Bobby are called into Jack’s office to discuss the main event.
The Second Act
An audible has been called with Ace taking on a new valet in the bartender, Tricia. Crystal doesn’t understand until Ace goes over his promo in saying he is dumping her for Tricia since she broke his heart by cheating with Bobby Pin.
Jack pretty much OKs the change to keep Ace sated. I mean, it is pretty damn last minute after all. Bobby and Crystal will go ahead with the segment but Crystal has questions. Ace says it’s just business.
With his son Thomas with him, Jack nails the lunch meeting with the state fairground board. Wild Bill shows up at the DWL Dome to stir some sh** up.
Ace makes himself scarce while Bill hitches his wagon to Crystal. Debbie—Jack and Willie’s assistant—tells him that he isn’t supposed to be there but relents since the fans love Wild Bill.
On the night of the show, Apocalypse and Diego are stoked about the house for the event. The latter of the two goes to speak with Rooster who is still sour about not getting his push yet.
Diego is booked to win the battle royal but offers to allow Rooster to eliminate him because he wants his friends happy and damn if Jack is upset about it.
Finishing Stretch
Outside, Crystal is getting ready for the main event and Wild Bill slithers up to dump more sugar in DWL’s tank, pointing her out as the company’s breakout star. In running his promo down with Jack and Thomas goes off into a shoot.
Jack has to reel him and remind him that DWL is a family show. First, a fight breaks out between Crystal and Tricia in the locker room. That’s broken up before Jack shows up.
Diego is planning to take the spill out of the ring during the battle royal when Rooster changes his mind and stays on script. He and Jack have a talk about it as Jack figured Rooster and Diego had changed the result.
Jack reminds Rooster that he isn’t some guy who doesn’t know who he is and that his time is coming soon. That seems to sate Rooster for now. Speaking of going off script, Crystal delivers a banger of a promo—cutting Ace off before he could reveal the photos of her and Bobby cheating.
It was a “You didn’t dump me, I dumped you” promo and actually better than Ace’s intended promo. Pissed off, Ace versus Bobby went off script as well. The match was a physical, aggressive, short steel cage match.
During it, special referee Jack Spade chastised Crystal for going off script in her promo. Now, the original big spot of the match was a missed frog splash from Bobby Pin. That was changed into a superplex from the top.
After that, Ace locked in a leg lock that ends up breaking Bobby’s leg to the point the bone breaks the skin! Shocking! Bobby is hurried out of the DWL Dome and to the hospital for surgery.
Wild Bill interjects himself into the main event at the fairgrounds. It is now a three-way ladder match for the belt which Jack has to accept. Jack and Ace argue about it resulting in Jack hemming Ace up against a soda machine.
Thomas sees this and runs off. Willie tells him the fairgrounds people are on the phone. The DWL gets the fairground spot but Willie is more concerned about Thomas not understanding what’s going on between Jack and Ace as well as being frightened by seeing Bobby’s leg broken.
Heels S1E5 “Swerve” Verdict: Diamond (5/5)
Wow. Wow! This episode juggled several stories without messing up and dropping one. The main story was the “love” triangle featuring Ace, Crystal, and Bobby.
With everything that happened there—and what a climax to it—I believe it strengthened the Jack-Ace storyline which needed more coals in the fire. Staci took a backseat in episode five but her run in with Wild Bill set up his snake-like meddling in a very important DWL show.
I’m glad that Rooster and Diego got a bit of shine in this edition of Heels. The story was more about Rooster but it’s always great to see how tight the rest of DWL locker room is outside of its major stars.
Thomas also shined as a character in this one. Everywhere Jack was, he was and he was bonding with his father through a shared love of wrestling. You could see Jack’s pride in Thomas taking to the backstage happenings with a lot of interest.
Wild Bill had the second and third best promos of the episode with his challenge being the best of the two. He was also in peak heel form by sewing dissent backstage.
Another strong banger from Heels.
