Not too long ago, Kenny Omega was a triple world champion. Holding the AEW World Championship, Impact Wrestling World Championship, and AAA Mega Championships all at once is a major set of accomplishments, but all reigns must end eventually. After today, he has no gold left – but only two belts were lost in matches.
Kenny Omega Lost Two Of His World Titles In Hard Fought Matches
First up, Christian Cage took the Impact Wrestling Championship on the debut episode of AEW Rampage. Cage would lose it to Josh Alexander who was taken out by Moose moments later. AEW & Impact Wrestling seem to have ended any working relationships for the moment as well. This alone will make this one title Omega might never reclaim.
Hangman Page took the AEW World Championship at Full Gear, and is now on route to taking on Bryan Danielson. Danielson earned his shot by defeating Miro at Full Gear, and this first defense is seemingly set for Winter is Coming in December. Page was the perfect choice to defeat Omega, seeing as the match’s result got nearly universal acclaim. Danielson has been playing a heel role against Page & Dark Order, and faces Colt Cabana tomorrow on Dynamite in Chicago.
Vacating The AAA Mega Championship, Replacement To Be Announced Tomorrow
El Hijo El Vikingo was set to take on Kenny Omega for the AAA Mega Championship in earlyDecember. This would have been the fifth defense of the title for Omega, who beat Sammy Guevara, Jack Evans, Laredo Kid & Andrade El Idolo previously. However, this match will no longer happen. It’s nothing to do with AEW pulling Omega from this commitment or anything of the like – instead, just the result of Omega’s body not being able to keep up.
Omega is taking time off to heal up some injuries, noting recently that he has had issues with Vertigo since 2018. He has also confirmed a shoulder and ankle injury. With AAA low on the importance scale for Omega, vacating the championship was not an easy choice – but easier than giving up the AEW World Championship. A replacement for Omega in the match will be announced on Tuesday.
