This past Sunday at Full Gear, the reign of Kenny Omega as AEW World Heavyweight Champion finally came to an end. Hangman Page was able to nail the Buckshot Lariat, and close things out to a massive reaction. However, fans might be wise to not expect Omega to be seeking a rematch – as it’s finally time for lingering injuries to be handled.
Kenny Omega Could Require Surgery
It’s been a poorly kept secret that Kenny Omega has been in rough physical shape for a while now. His demanding schedule and high impact style in the ring would do this. However, he’d keep pushing back the potential of getting things treated as he spent his time on top in AEW. This led to some incredible matches, with his bouts against Rey Fenix, Bryan Danielson, and an underrated Triple Threat with PAC & Orange Cassidy standing out.
Now that his reign is over, Omega finally has time to get things checked out properly. Today he was examined in depth, and things aren’t looking great as per the rumor mill. Omega has been carrying injuries since his time in NJPW, and now he could be looking at shoulder surgery because of it.
This is the curse of a strong work ethic – and we have seen this same issue with Hiroshi Tanahashi of NJPW, who once said “Fans don’t pay for me to sit around at home.” Omega has never put it into words like this, but it’s implied in his actions – but the time to sit at home has come. We will have a better view on the damage to Omega by the end of the week – but there’s a good way for AEW to write him off TV if surgery is required.
Adam Cole Has Unresolved Tension With Omega
Since the moment Adam Cole stepped into AEW, and buddied up with The Young Bucks, there has been tension between him and Kenny Omega. This tension dates back to their time together in Bullet Club, where it was never resolved as both men went their separate ways. If Omega is to be taken off TV following shoulder surgery, having Adam Cole & The Young Bucks turn on him and take him out would leave a huge impact.
Omega no longer brings benefit to The Elite. He’s broken down, and doesn’t have the gold. Don Callis just annoys people. It’d be best to make them disappear if you’re Adam Cole, especially as he could very well be in a better spot with Omega gone. This gives fans a storyline to enjoy, Omega a chance for a fiery babyface return from injury, and Cole a road to the top. Everyone wins.
