When Matt Hardy popped up in AEW, no one knew what to expect. It was on the same night that Mr. Brodie Lee made his debut as The Exalted One, after weeks of Hardy teasing that role was meant for him. While Broken Matt didn’t connect in AEW, he has found a niche for himself as the leader of the Hardy Family Office, which keeps him busy in and out of the ring. However, if WWE got their way – Hardy never would have left WWE in the first place.
Matt Hardy Didn’t Want To Be Shelved Like Other Older Names In WWE – Noticed AEW Does A Great Job With Legends
When the WWE deal of Matt Hardy was coming to a close, they were eager to keep him onboard. The nostalgia of seeing The Hardy Boyz compete might never leave fans of the Attitude Era, and WWE knows there is money in having them around. However, despite being offered big money, Matt Hardy was looking for something different.
“They offered some good deals and good money. But I said it’s important to me that I’m going to be treated appropriately as a wrestler. Because there’s this thing there with Vince and older wrestlers he just feels like they are done. Even if there’s things they could utilize. I think Tony Khan does a masterful job of putting older guys into certain positions where they can succeed and they can optimize their efforts and their talents.
The Proof Of AEW Using Legends Better Is Clear Every Week
Right now, aside from Rey Mysterio, Edge & Jeff Hardy, there are very few legends who still step into the ring with WWE. Their legends deals mainly just come with merchandise and special appearances on episodes focused on legends of the past, like the coming Retro RAW.
AEW meanwhile has legends all throughout their show. Sting is teaming with Darby Allin. Arn Anderson is around for every Nightmare Family match. Jake Roberts manages Lance Archer. Tully Blanchard is nailing piledrivers alongside FTR whenever he gets the chance. These names are common, but used to boost the young names of the future. Matt Hardy gets into the ring when needed, but otherwise relies on his character work in AEW – while also working indy matches with the likes of nZo.
