Meghan Markle has reportedly been calling various US Senators in order to lobby for paid parental leave.
Two US Senators Claim Meghan Markle Phoned Them To Talk US Politics
That is according to two high-profile Senators. Step forward: Senator Susan Collins (representing Maine) and Senator Shelley Moore Capito (representing West Virginia).
This begs the question, how would Meghan be able to get hold of such powerful people. Reports go on to suggest that Meghan had forged a relationship with New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
As such, it is claimed that Kristen had given the numbers to Meghan, who decided to pursue them out. Meghan is certainly brave in what she is trying to do. After all, not everyone has been impressed by her role in trying to make a difference within US politics.
Just recently, US Republican politician Jason Smith demanded that the Royal family remove Meghan’s title because it was giving her undue influence in political affairs.
Although Susan and Shelley did not react that way, they were surprised by the fact that Meghan had reached out to them. In an interview with Politico, Shelley had said: “I was in my car when I got a call. But the number was blocked.
“So I thought it was Senator Joe Manchin. He always calls from an unknown number. And then she said, ‘Senator Capito? This is Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.’ I have no idea how she got my number.”
It is clear from the message above that Meghan is using her Royal title as a way to gain more leverage. This is allowing her to forge connections and ultimately counter the influence that the Royal family may be having against her in drumming up negative opinions.
Even though the use of the Royal title did surprise Susan, she was still delighted to engage in discourse with Meghan. She stated: “I was happy to talk to her, but I’m more interested in what the people of Maine think.”
Meghan is certainly pulling out all the stops to get what she wants, but whether it does lead to some actual change that she is hoping for is anyone’s guess. Time will tell.
