With the G1 Climax & Power Struggle behind us, fans of NJPW are now looking forward to Best of The Super Juniors and World Tag League tournaments. These will run side by side, and take fans into early December as they alternate nights. The World Tag League’s field remains a mystery. However we do know the twelve men who will battle in this year’s Best of The Super Juniors tournament.
A Rock Solid Set Of Matches Is Coming From Best of The Super Juniors
Things are kept fairly safe and simple this year. All the names in the mix have been around on recent shows in NJPW, but this still means a solid set of talent. The names are as follows.
- Ryusuke Taguchi
- Master Wato
- Robbie Eagles
- YOH
- Hiromu Takahashi
- BUSHI
- El Desperado
- Yoshinobu Kanemaru
- DOUKI
- Taiji Ishimori
- El Phantasmo
- SHO
Due to the nature of the tournament, there isn’t any blocks like in the G1 Climax, meaning everyone will wrestle everyone else in the block. The two men with the highest point totals will meet in the finals, and get a title shot at Wrestle Kingdom. Should the reigning IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion win, El Desperado will pick his opponent for the event instead. There aren’t many names missing that could have been in the mix, but seeing as he’s one half of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, it’s unfortunate Tiger Mask IV didn’t make the cut.
No Surprises This Year, Hopefully In 2022
Unfortunately, NJPW playing it safe means no surprising names this year. There was hope for the likes of Jonathan Grehasm or Dragon Lee in the mix after their releases from Ring of Honor, but it’s simply too hard to get into Japan right now. They are still doing everything possible to protect their citizens from COVID-19, and this makes surprises hard.
Much like how Gresham & Lee didn’t make it into BOSJ, we can’t expect Aussie Open in World Tag League, unless NJPW pulls some big tricks out. Who would you have liked to see in the 2021 Best of The Super Juniors tournament? Which name do you hope wins? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
