Several tennis stars have spoken out following the disappearance of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai after the latter had made allegations of sexual assault against former Chinese Vice President Zhang Gaoli.
Tennis Stars Rally Behind Peng Shuai Who Disappeared After Claiming That Former Chinese Vice President Zhang Gaoli Had Sexually Assaulted Her
The tennis player made the claims on Chinese social media (Weibo) that Zang had done the assault in 2018. As part of those claims, Peng had apparently had an on-off relationship with him.
Although the post has been taken off social media, Peng has not been seen in public since. It is clear that the Chinese government has attempted to make this scandal die down.
Naturally, some of the world’s biggest tennis players came out to express their concern after feeling that Peng could be in danger. Step forward: Naomi Osaka.
The former has had her own issues, notably when she decided to walk away from the sport after claiming that she was struggling with mental health. And now that she has seen somebody else in need, Naomi is making sure that the world supports Peng.
In a post to her fans on Twitter, she said: “I was recently informed of a fellow tennis player that has gone missing shortly after revealing that she has been sexually abused.
“Censorship is never ok at any cost. I hope Peng Shuai and her family are safe and ok. I’m in shock of the current situation, and I’m sending love and light her way.”
As a consequence of all this, the #whereispengshuai,’ went viral on social media. Unlike other countries, however, organisations such as the #MeTooMovement are outlawed in China.
Therefore, it is impossible for people to come forward and speak out against the Chinese government. If they happen to do so, there are going to be serious repercussions.
Tennis legend, Chris Evert, had this to say on the matter: “Yes, these accusations are very disturbing. I’ve known Peng since she was 14; we should all be concerned.
“This is serious; where is she? Is she safe? Any information would be appreciated.” Let us hope that nothing has happened to Peng and that her whereabouts come to light.
