A TikTok account has been deactivated after it showed a group of people conducting various videos wearing blackface make-up.
TikTok Account Taken Down Over Showing Teenagers Wearing Blackface Make-Up
The account, by the name of @blackfacehypehouse, contained a list of videos involving teenagers from a white background miming music that was made by black artists.
This caught the attention of various TikTok users, including @kingjeanty1989, who simply said the following: “Wow.” The video instantly went viral and raised many talking points amongst the community.
A significant proportion of people were outraged by this video, given that it had been allowed to stay for so long. And yet, this is not the first time that TikTok has been called out.
They have previously been accused of removing certain content that involves LGBTQ topics. But when it comes to dealing with purported racism, they have been found wanting.
One user in responsive wrote: “So we’re literally going to sit here and let this whole page be a fucking thing? Yeah, yeah no the fuck we’re not,”
While another stated: “Yeah… TikTok not doing their job.” The primary reason why this caused so much outrage was that TikTok had initially stated that the account did not contravene their guidelines.
This was especially hard to take when a significant number of people had flagged it as being in violation of the platform’s rules. Despite facing significant pressure at the time, the platform simply remarked: “We found that the reported content does not violate our guidelines.
“We understand that you might not want to see this type of content, and you have the option to block this account.”
The people behind the account have not yet responded, which is understandable given the huge scrutiny that is on them. According to reports, the account had been set up by a group of British teenagers.
One of the teenager’s schools has allegedly been contacted, but as of now, there has been nothing forthcoming. TikTok needs to up its game when it comes to monitoring the content that it allows to be uploaded.
However, there are always going to be a subset of people that favour unqualified freedom of speech. And that is a fine line to balance.
