Over the nearly three years that All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has been in business, they have given a lot of indie wrestlers some extra work. Some like Eddie Kingston & Ricky Starks would be signed after showing up, while others showed up, did their jobs, and that was that. However, Tony Khan has now revealed one name that when brought up with TNT Executives, caused some serious excitement. Oddly enough, it was The Deathmatch King – Nick Gage that got the top brass in TNT excited.
Nick Gage Has Some Fans At TNT
This is the same man who potentially ruined any chance for AEW to have Domino pizza ads ever again. Gage was in AEW at the call of MJF, as one of the Labours of Jericho. They had a proper deathmatch on network TV, complete with pizza cutters and light tubes. This was largely a one off, but MJF refusing to pay Gage for his work in the storyline could see him show up down the line.
Even still – fans were excited to see Gage on a major show, and as Tony Khan would reveal, so were some of the names at TNT. He’d mention it during a recent interview with the Wrestling Perspective Podcast.
“I wouldn’t want to watch a whole card of it or for six months straight, but I think for a big match of big payoff, it can be really good. In that case, if we’re going to bring in Nick Gage, I thought it made sense to do it that way as opposed to having Nick Gage doing Marquis of Queensbury or chain wrestling, even though he’s a very capable wrestler. I thought it was going to be a lot of fun and even on the TNT side, we had the marketing call, and going into it people were fans of Nick Gage and people knew him.
When I said we were going to bring him in, he got a pop, even from the network side. People all over are familiar with his work and it was definitely a calculated thing. When Chris mentioned him, I knew it was going to be a crazy match. I gave it the thumbs up because that’s the spirit of AEW, independent wrestling and he’s a big thing on independent wrestling,”
Letting Indie Names Be Themselves Makes Things More Genuine
While we can never expect Nick Gage to be able to do what’s he’s best on every week on Dynamite, him being able to come in and be himself really earned AEW a lot of respect. Every week on shows like AEW Dark, talent are able to come in from the indies and showcase who they are – not who AEW wants them to be.
Such a thing seems impossible when it comes to major companies when all you know is WWE, but AEW are proving that different ways of doing things can still get results. Hopefully Gage getting stiffed by MJF comes out at some point, and he can bring his pizza cutter to AEW Rampage, and give his fans back at TNT something to be excited about.
