On Friday, the Beverly Hill Police made an arrest in the murder of philanthropist Jacqueline Avant. On December 1, police received a report about a shooting at 2:20 AM at the Avant’s residence on Maytor Place. She would die as a result of her wounds at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Progress in the Murder of Jacqueline Avant Investigation
Aariel Maynor was identified as the culprit on Thursday after the Hollywood Division of the LAPD was notified of a shooting on Graciosa Drive at around 3:30 AM—an hour after Jacqueline Avant’s shooting. He was found in the backyard of the Campbell residence after shooting himself in the foot. It was 17-year-old Grace Campbell-McGuire who made a 911 call after he’d shot himself.
Aariel Maynor Arrested in Connection to Murder of Jacqueline Avant
She was initially awakened due to the noise Maynor was making in the house after he’d broken into the house through a window. Campbell-McGuire told the Los Angeles Times that she heard Aariel Maynor call 911 for assistance afterward.
Regularly in and out of prison, Maynor is reported to have a lengthy burglary and robbery record. In their investigation into Maynor, the police retrieved an AR-15. He will be jailed once medically cleared.
The Avants
Jacqueline Avant is the wife of Clarence Avant, a music exec known as “The Black Godfather”, founder of the influential late-1960s record label Sussex Records, the late-70s label Tabu Records, and a 2021 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Avant is known for his managing of and association with Quincy Jones, Alexander O’Neal, The SOS Band, and Bill Withers.
She was heavily involved in improvised communities across Los Angeles, at one time serving as the president of Neighbors of Watts (NOW) during the 1970s as well as on the board of directors for UCLA’s International Students Center. Their daughter Nicole Avant served as U.S Ambassador to the Bahamas during the Obama administration.
