Right now, much like Kenny Omega – The Young Bucks are taking some much deserved rest. This past year has seen them reign as the AEW World Tag Team Champions. Despite always having some help from Brandon Cutler and others from The Elite? Their title defenses always brought the fans something to remember. Now, their efforts have been honoured as they top the second annual PWI Top 50 tag team edition.
Young Bucks Join Kenny Omega & Bianca Belair On Top Of Wrestling In 2021
Pro Wrestling Illustrated have been ranking the top male singles stars for a long time, but recently decided special issues of their long running magazine dedicated to the top female and tag team stars would take off as well.
We already know Bianca Belair took #1 for the females, and Kenny Omega for the men, so with The Young Bucks taking the tag team #1? The PWI top trilogy is complete for the year. Last year, Bayley, FTR & Jon Moxley took the top spots.
We also know the other teams in the Top 5 for tag teams, despite the issue being set for a 2022 physical release. Lucha Bros take #2, likely due to them winning the already iconic steel cage match to take the AEW World Tag Team Championships from The Young Bucks at All Out.
Dangerous Tekkers took Spot #3, having really boosted the NJPW Tag Team division over the past year, nearly taking it to the main event of Tokyo Dome. The Usos took #4, with PWI acknowledging their tag team excellence. Finally, Stardom duo ALK took #5. Giulia and Syuri make up this team.
Will AEW Be Topped In Tag Team Wrestling Anytime Soon?
Right now, AEW is the biggest company which truly treats tag team wrestling as being important. This has been reflected by FTR & Young Bucks having claimed the top spot in these rankings with back to back years.
WWE has some talented tag teams, such as NXT Tag Team Champions Imperium, NXT UK Tag Team Champions Pretty Deadly, and The Usos – but they’re not treated as top stars. FTR, Lucha Bros & Young Bucks? AEW treats them as top acts, because they are just that.
Right now, AEW is bringing tag team wrestling back by keeping things simple, and not randomly splitting up established tag teams for shock value. NJPW is a close second after 2021, especially if Tetsuya Naito & SANADA keep up with their tag team work.
