It’s always great to hear where wrestlers were inspired to do what they do, and the stories are always great to hear.
When Edge and Christian first broke into the WWE, they talked about being right there in Toronto when Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior faced off for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship.
They were already wrestling fanatics, but seeing that match live left no doubt in their minds about what they wanted to do with their lives.
In a way, it’s fitting that this match also inspired Seth Rollins to become a wrestler, and it adds another layer to his and Edge’s Hell in a Cell Match and gives us hope they’ll face each other at WrestleMania at some point.
Beginning with a legend
Rollins recently talked with Josh Martinez in New York and Rollins talked about the match that inspired him to become a wrestler.
As we mentioned above, it was Hogan vs. Warrior, but it’s so much more fun to hear it in his words, so here’s an excerpt thanks to @the_wrestling_news2 for sharing it.
“I would say Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania 6. That’s probably the one for me that got me like stuck, stuck. I was a fan a little bit before that, but that was the one, I have the image of the video cassette tape burned into my brain of WrestleMania 6. So, that would be the one where I was like, ‘yeah, this is it for me’.”
This is one of my personal favorites as a Ultimate Warrior fan growing up, and I wore out our VHS copy of it.
But personal feelings aside, it’s great to hear that the current generation of greats were inspired by one of the most anticipated matches of an era.
It speaks to how well the match has stood the test of time and how electric the atmosphere in Toronto was that day.
It’s even more amazing how Rollins’ style isn’t close to being like Hogan and Warrior’s as he’s more focused on speed and athleticism than brute force.
There’s no denying Seth Rollins is one of the best in the world and to think how much we would’ve missed over the last ten years had Rollins never seen that match.
It’s amazing how one match can change the course of someone’s life so dramatically, and it just shows we never know where or when inspiration will strike us.
