On Sunday, December 12, Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned by Andrea Meza (Miss Universe 2020) as her successor in the 70th Miss Universe Pageantry. The event was held in Israel with 80 delegates from different countries, races and walks of life.
With Sandhu as the winner; Miss Universe Paraguay, Nadia Ferreira was runner up, while Miss Universe South Africa, Lalela Mswane was second runner up.
India Takes Home The Crown After 21 Years
India, in the past two decades, has not won the Miss Universe title, but Sandhu made history, winning the crown, after 21 years. Her predecessors were Sushmita Sen in 1994, and Lara Dutta who won in 2000 both of which are actors.

The 21-year-old Sandhu is an actress, a model and a women’s rights advocate. She also helps her mother who is a gynecologist to provide the best healthcare for women. She attended Shivalik Public School in India. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
Before the Miss Universe 2021 pageantry, she had been awarded titles of; Femina Miss India Punjab, top 12 in Femina Miss India 2019 and, Miss Diva Universe. When announced winner of Miss Universe 2021 pageantry, Sandhu shed tears of joy before she proceeded to receive her crown.
The selection process included selecting Top 15 delegates, amongst 80 after a preliminary competition the competition included interviews, a swimsuit and an evening gown competition, also fans were asked to vote to select a 16th delegate.
This is different from the Top 20 that we’ve been used to these past years. of the Top 16, the Top 5 were chosen, then finally the Top 3 that got crowned.
The top 5 delegates were: Miss South Africa, Lalela Mswane: Miss Columbia, Valeria Maria: Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu; Miss Philippines, Batrice Gomez and, Miss Paraguay, Nadia Ferreira.
The Host of the show was Steve Harvey, and the judges were: Miss Universe v2016, Iris Mittenaere, Rena Sofer, Marian Rivera, Adamari Lopez, and supermodel Adrianna Lima.
