Tom Holland has been a darling of social media and the entertainment world both personally and in his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now he’ll be taking on another legendary role as he portrays triple threat legend, Fred Astaire.
Tom Holland to Tackle Fred Astaire Role
Holland is one of those actors in young Hollywood who either been put forward for major and iconic roles or snagged them. However, he’s recognized as one of a few who excels at the role once they have it.
Tom Holland Scores Another Role of a Lifetime and Will Portray Fred Astaire for Sony
During an interview with GQ, Tom Holland mentioned that Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal said she’d like Holland to portray Fred Astaire in a biopic as well as sign on for another round of Spidey movies.
While talking with AP, he said that he’d taken the role and that the script “came in a week ago” but he hasn’t had the opportunity to read it. Apparently, Pascal contacted him while he was taking a bath and that they discussed the script.
Holland definitely has the tools to tackle the role as he began his career on stage in London. Astaire himself started as a child on the vaudeville circuit in the latter part of the 1900s.
While classically trained at the Alviene Master School of Theatre and Academy of Cultural Arts, he would be inspired to take a more energetic and exciting approach to dance from Black vaudeville acts such as Bojangles and Bubbles as well as picking up the waltz and the tango.
All of this means that Fred Astaire would definitely be a hard act to portray on film. That’s in addition to Astaire having a clause in his contract that prevented any portrayals of him on film as he has “no particular desire to have my life misinterpreted, which it would be.”
As for Tom Holland, he’s been promoting the third film in Sony’s recent Spidey series, Spider-Man: No Way Home which co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Zendaya, Jamie Foxx, William DeFoe, and Alfred Molina among others.
The film hits theaters on December 17.
