This past Sunday at NXT WarGames, there was no gold to be found by Von Wagner & Kyle O’Reilly. They weren’t able to defeat Imperium, who were perhaps better than ever. Following the match, Von Wagner took a shot at O’Reilly – who was ready for the betrayal. O’Reilly took Wagner down, and later in the show called for a steel cage match tonight on NXT.
Kyle O’Reilly Truly Tests Von Wagner
O’Reilly didn’t wait for Wagner to hit the ring, hitting from behind and throwing him right into the cage. Wagner would take refuge in the corner before taking some heavy blows, and coming back with a lariat. O’Reilly would find himself driven into the corner with some shoulder strikes, before Wagner was taken to the mat with some smart wrestling – and kept there with some rushing knee strikes.
Wagner would have his knee isolated against the steel of the cage, but was able to fight free and rush O’Reilly down with a big boot. The crowd rained down a “You suck” chant, so Wagner hit a suplex. They changed to “You still suck”, as he would get trapped in a heel hook while choking O’Reilly on the steel. O’Reilly came out with some big strikes, before taking a suplex and falling headbutt for a two count.
Wagner applied a tight waist lock, and the crowd would chant in support of him as he broke free. O’Reilly nailed some kicks to the leg, before one big strike from Wagner took him down. A powerbomb against the steel saw O’Reilly turn things into a DDT. We’d go into a picture and picture break, which saw O’Reilly & Wagner slug things out on the mat.
Wagner Goes Low To Get The Win
Wagner would perform another waist lock, and O’Reilly broke out much easier this time – before being slammed into the mat. Again Wagner went to the waist lock, this being his version of the endless headlock of Randy Orton. O’Reilly kept fighting free, only to end up back in this hold – a state of purgatory in this steel cage match.
Finally with the picture in picture break over, O’Reilly would make another comeback and take a big strike to be sent to the mat. A huge knee strike rocked Von Wagner, before he’d be crushed against the steel with a trio of rushing forearms before some downward stomps from the cage. O’Reilly applied the choke, but Wagner suplexed his way free.
A running high knee got Wagner a two count, before O’Reilly chopped him down with a shoulder to the knee. The stomp to the neck kept Wagner down as O’Reilly went up top. Wagner would catch up and look for a Super Chokeslam, but had his face smashed off the steel cage. O’Reilly hit the knee drop to the neck, but Wagner kicked out. One low blow and a spinning butterfly suplex, and Von Wagner wins.
An less than impressive showing from the rookie Von Wagner, who failed to get more than ‘You Suck’ chant from the crowd as he stumbled through the match. O’Reilly did his best to keep things steady, but wasn’t enough to save this one. Match Rating: 2.75/5 (** 3/4)
After the match, Wagner slammed the cage door into the face of O’Reilly – potentially closing the door on O’Reilly in WWE as a whole. His contract is up on the 10th. Will this be the last of Kyle O’Reilly in WWE? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
