Tonight is New Year’s Evil in WWE NXT, and one of the biggest matches on the card is a massive six man tag team match. For the first time in a while, Imperium are united as WALTER joins the NXT Tag Team Champions Fabian Aichner & Marcel Bartel. Their opponents are former NXT Tag Team Champions MSK… and the returning Matt Riddle, but this spot wasn’t always meant for Riddle – but rather Jeff Hardy.
Jeff Hardy Was Supposed To Be The Shaman MSK Were Searching For
This might not come as a surprise to those who were paying attention to the journey of MSK. For several weeks after losing the NXT Tag Team Championships, they went on their own stoner movie journey for the ages. It was all to find ‘the shaman’ who was the master of tag team wrestling.
Jeff Hardy was expected from the start, but his release coming halfway through the journey caused plans to be changed. It has now been confirmed by Fightful Select that Hardy was infact the original plan, meaning he would have wrestled alongside MSK against WALTER & Imperium. Riddle was a smart last minute change, and WWE scrambled to film content with MSK & Riddle to push the story ahead.
Riddle Returning To NXT Might Give Just As Big Of A Boost After Day One
This would have been the NXT debut of Jeff Hardy, and a major surprise for fans. Working a match with WALTER would have been a highlight of the later years of his career, but Riddle is a great replacement. His NXT run was cut short by most fans’ opinion, having never claimed singles gold on the brand.
This also means that just days after hitting the ring with Migos on his side, he is showing up in NXT 2.0 will help give the show a needed boost. If it’s as big of a boost that a legend like Hardy showing up would have caused, that’s unknown. The one advantage of Hardy showing up was a lack of main roster storylines, while Riddle is busy as one half of the RAW Tag Team Champions alongside Randy Orton.
