Olympian Lindsey Vonn has spoken on how her mental health has suffered, despite having a star-studded sporting career.
Olympian Lindsey Vonn Opens Up On Her Mental Health Struggles-‘I Realised Something Was Really Wrong’
The sportswoman is undoubtedly the most successful skier in the history of the sport, with an outstanding 82 victories in the World Cup.
But the road to achieving that success was not easy and clouded by long-term mental health struggles which started with depression in 2012.
And given that she retired from the sport in 2019, with no imminent plans on making a comeback, now seems the right time to tackle her issues head on. In an interview with Fox News, Lindsey revealed the moment she realised that something was up.
She said: “Fitness and staying in shape have always been very important for me so when I started feeling that I would rather stay in bed than start my daily routine, I realised something was really wrong.
“I was starting to care less about training for my lifelong goals, so I knew I had to get help.” But one of the issues which prevented her from dealing with it immediately was the negative perception that people have around mental health.
This is particularly true, with regards to sportspeople, because the last thing people would expect is for an Olympian to be struggling mentally given that their mind has to be in tip-top shape in order to compete in highly-pressured environments.
And this is something that she has seen throughout her career and life in general. She added: “The U.S. has definitely come a long way…There is still a huge stigma surrounding mental health in other countries and there’s a long way to go.”
But through it all, she has managed to come out of the other side. Lindsey is now hoping that her story can serve as an example to others that it is possible to overcome anything.
As such, she is hoping that she can give back to the community in any way and help those going through similar problems.
Lindsey Vonn following comments confirmed as much: “I’m feeling great, probably the best I have ever felt! Personally, I am in a great place and professionally, I’m looking forward.”
